Please let me know in the comments if this or another solution has worked for you and hopefully it will help others as well. I’m still none the wiser as to what made the change in my sound settings in the first place. I also deleted all my temporary files to no effect.

I also checked my computer history and saw that there had been a Windows update a week ago which seemed to correspond with the time that the sound went. This last one is worth a try at the very least.
